Forest Studio

2025

A two-day design and build programme for young people, rooted in forest school principles. The workshop was a collaboration between myself, an architectural designer, and Robyn Lammiman, a woodland conservationist.

Hosted at St Mary’s Secret Garden in Hackney, with support from Hackney City Farm, the workshop took place within a rich environment of trees, meadows, flowering plants, and food-growing spaces.

The brief centred on creating infrastructure for new beehives arriving at the garden, inspired by historical examples where beekeepers housed hives in decorative and elaborate structures. As a beekeeper herself, Robyn guided the group in learning about beekeeping practices and the ecological relationships between bees and the garden.

Participants first explored ideas through model-making before moving on to full-scale construction. Using reclaimed softwood and hardwood timbers, hand saws, and drills, the young people built their designs. The final structures incorporated shelters, suspended elements for hives, and playful infrastructure for the beekeeper.
