Rubble Garden

2024

A co-design and programme led while working with architectural educators MATT+FIONA.

The garden was developed in collaboration with Beth Chatto Gardens and transforms an existing brownfield site in the center of Colchester into a wild dry garden. Existing plants and ecological features were retained, while rubble from a nearby building site was curated into mounds planted with new hardy specimens.

A group of 11- to 14-year-olds participated in an intensive summer studio, creating full-scale prototypes of social public realm furniture for a new interim garden. Local maker Tim Germain used locally felled oak to fabricate their designs. The final pieces enable users to get up close to nature.
