Theatre of Giants

2025

A large-scale outdoor shadow theatre, built as part of Beam Camp’s youth summer build programme in USA, New Hampshire. Each year, Beam invites architects and artists to propose projects through an international open call.

Building on Beam Camp’s previous successes in performative production, the shadow theatre is a unique piece of performance infrastructure that transforms the small into the giant, allows bodies to merge, and brings objects to life.

The project was constructed by 150 young people over six weeks. Participants learned a wide range of building techniques, including timber framing for the stage and structural steel welding for the screens. Alongside the construction, campers devised and wrote a series of plays to be performed on the stage, creating puppets, costumes, and sets to support their productions.

Shadow theatre has a long history, often performed in intimate, glowing settings with intricate puppetry. Utilising Beam Camp’s dramatic landscape and its unusually large team, this project expands the art form to a new scale - culminating in a dramatic performance of light and shadow on what is likely the world’s largest shadow theatre stage.
